Portfolio > Mapping the Unknown

This body of work was developed during a two-month artist residency at nes in Skagastrond, Iceland during April and May 2017.

The paintings and drawings utilize aspects of the Icelandic landscape/geology to explore loss and regeneration. I was interested in the movement of North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and the topography of the Mid-Atlantic ridge. I synthesized these references with lines from an electrocardiogram to metaphorically suggest what is visible and what is hidden below the surface.

Additional work in mixed media combined medical prescriptions with imagery derived from medical equipment and indigenous Icelandic sea life. In 2017 I was fortunate to exhibit the body of work at Surel's Place Artist in Residency in Boise, Idaho.
